Azealia Banks has said could see herself as president of the US.

Asked by Channel 4 News if she would ever run for office, the controversial hip-hop artist said: “Yeah I would, I think I could do it.”

She also called for a new black political party or a trusted board of members to be created – something she said she “maybe” wanted to be a part of.

Azealia made the comments to Channel 4 in an interview about her new album, Broke With Expensive Taste.

She insisted the songs on her album were not about politics: “It’s so funny because people are always saying ‘You’re always ranting and talking about politics you should put it in your music’ [but] for me music is just how I escape from how messed up everything is. Music is how I just let my soul breathe.”

But she said it was “discouraging to see young black men getting just shot down in the street for being black outside”.

Azealia added: “I just feel like for centuries and centuries and centuries black people have been painted to be these animals and just be these crazy people when we are really not and I feel like all of the things like hip hop – these are the things we have created for ourselves in the face of all of the adversity.

In the past, Azealia has accused caucasian hip hop artists of appropriating black culture.

She told Channel 4 that while she didn’t mind non-black people coming to her concerts she drew the line at them making hip-hop music: “That’s fine, but self-preservation is key, you can come to my show, but you cannot do what I do.”

The rapper, who is no stranger to controversy, has been involved in feuds with other artists including Lily Allen, Iggy Azalea and Lupe Fiasco, but she said she is working on her famous temper: “I’ve definitely got a really really high temper… which I’m working on.”

While she often vents on Twitter, it seems that she might be taking a rest from tweeting – at least for a few weeks at any rate – as she is giving it up for Lent.

Fans don’t need to worry that she is going off the radar completely however, as she assured them she will still be on Instagram.
