BBC shows EastEnders and Strictly Come Dancing have beaten their ITV rivals Coronation Street and The X Factor in the most searched for online topics of the year.

Yahoo have released their Year In Review, a round up of the biggest trends in online searches from Yahoo Search over the past year, and it seems BBC are winning the viewers’ attention as their flagship soap and reality TV programme have come in as the third and fourth most popular topics respectively.

ITV is lagging just behind, with The X Factor at number five, Coronation Street at number six, and Britain’s Got Talent at number seven.

However, ITV does hold more places in the top 10 searches as This Morning has made number nine, while BBC’s The Voice is bottom of the reality TV searches, making it into the list at number 10.

Both broadcasters were beaten to the top spot by Channel 5, who saw the most TV searches of the year with Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother, which aired two series of the star version of the show this year as well as one series of the original version.
