AFTER returning home from holiday, tired and with no food in the cupboards, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks was the perfect place to relax.

And although not the blue paradise I’d been in 24 hours earlier, the pub’s Arnside location certainly gave me a boost as I looked out over Morecambe Bay. Inside was also lovely – there were locals laughing at the bar and several families dining, which made for a great atmosphere.

Having eaten seafood all week, we wanted some red meat and we were not disappointed. I chose the burger, which at £7.95 was great value with plenty of thick, tasty chips and a small salad.

My partner chose the mixed grill (£13.95) from the specials board, and he was impressed. His plate was completely filled with meat, which he said was all cooked spot on.

“A fried egg short of the perfect mixed grill” was how he summed it up, but I’m not sure how he could have fit anything else in!

For those who feel like something lighter or less beefy, there are plenty of other ‘pub grub’ choices, such as vegetarian lasagne, but the steak and ale pie also looked good.

The only thing that put a dampner on this pleasant meal was the service, which although friendly, was not, in my opinion, very efficient. For instance, drinks did not arrive until after our food had been served.

There was also a problem paying for extra food with a card.

Nevertheless, for anyone who fancies a wholesome value-for-money meal with a great view, this is a fantastic place to go.
