County wants better booze curbs
MORE must be done to tackle alcohol misuse among young people in Lancashire, says a county council task group.
It has identified the celebrity culture of drinking and access to cheap alcohol as key issues - and wants the Government to take action.
Lancashire's children and young people overview and scrutiny committee launched the group to consider the wide range of issues that influence young people and alcohol misuse.
Its recommendations include better education for children, parents and schools about the dangers of alcohol misuse and calling for the provision of more activities for young people at weekends.
The report admits that advertisers have to tread a fine line when deciding on campaigns - because they must not appeal to susceptible children.
And it asks the Government to make health warnings on alcohol compulsory, to tighten advertising rules and to have separate alcohol sections in supermarkets where children do not have access.
The report also praises the council's trading standards service for its work on preventing under-age sales.
Lancashire now has a rate of successful test purchases that is around half the national average.
