North West MEP backs William Hague's proposal for veto on EU legislation
1:29pm Tuesday 4th June 2013 in News
A NORTH West MEP said he strongly supports foreign secretary William Hague’s proposal to give national parliaments a veto on proposed EU legislation.
Liberal Democrat Chris Davies said that on issues such as financial regulation and environmental matters it was clear that cross-border measures were essential.
Mr Davies said: “William Hague’s plan is along the right lines. All proposals for new EU laws should have to pass a scrutiny test.
“National parliaments should communicate with one another and be given a period of time in which to object.
“If say, half a dozen are agreed that the measure is not required then it should go no further in Brussels.
“Europe should concentrate on what’s needed most, building a stronger economy, a fairer society and a better environment.”
